Test shows laser printers are power hogs

A test by German computer magazine Computer Bild has shown that most laser printers are energy hogs.

Six tested devices used between 174 and 334 watts during use. Ink jet printers tend to use only double-digit wattage levels.

Two of the printers also produced high levels of fine dust. Arguments that printing costs are lower with laser printers also didn’t hold up. Nonetheless, they are fast in comparison to other options. Printing a letter tends to take between three and six seconds.

New long-life battery laptops from Dell

Dell has released two new laptops from the nascent ULV class. The 13z and 15z are members of the Inspiron series and cost 550 and 580 dollars respectively. ULV stands for Ultra Low Voltage and refers to processors designed to work at lower voltages and use less power.

In the case of the new Dell laptops, that translates into respective battery lives of 11 hours (13z with a 13.3 inch monitor) and 10 hours (15z with 15.6 inch monitor).

ULV processors do not require heavy cooling, which translates into small fans and flatter devices. The 13z is no more than 26.4 millimetres thick, while its brother the 15z measures only 29.2 millimetres.

In both cases, customers can choose between the Intel Pentium Dual-Core and Intel Core-2 Duo processor. The displays provide resolutions of up to 1366 x 768 pixels, with hard drives of up to 320 gigabytes (GB) and 6 GM of RAM. Both laptops come with WLAN and a
1.3 megapixel webcam as standard features.

New Apple TV software available

Apple has released new software for its Apple TV network media player. Version 3.0 offers a redesigned user interface, the company announced.

The new version provides simplified navigation through iTunes libraries, as well as the ability to enjoy a full-screen depiction of the extra information included in iTunes Extras and iTunes LP files on a television.

Apple TV also contains new software to create music playlists and internet radio based on the Genius function. The software is available immediately for free download by owners of Apple TV devices.

Opera upgrades browser to block Chinese users from Facebooking

Chinese Internet users would no longer be able to access Facebook, as the web browser Opera has upgraded its Chinese version closing a loophole that allowed users to access websites banned by the government.

Mobile users of the Opera Mini browser were asked to upgrade to a Chinese version at this weekend, BBC reports.

Opera confirmed that it had started directing users of the international version of the mobile browser to the Chinese version on 20 November.

“The difference between the Chinese and the international version is that the former connects to compression servers within China….. benefits are higher speed, lower costs and an overall improved mobile web browsing experience,” the firm said in a statement.

Earlier, traffic ran over Opera servers bypassing the so-called Great Firewall of China, making the browser popular with Chinese users.

The company was not prepared to discuss the “background for this decision”.

Chinese bloggers had a plenty of speculation on the firm’s decision.

“Let me guess what has happened here. The Chinese government has put pressure on Opera to close down that free access. And like most companies, they complied,” wrote blogger Carsten Ullrich.

iPhone can act as chemical detector

If scientists have their way, then smartphones like the iPhone may double up as chemical sensors that can transmit alerts to first responders about the release of dangerous chemicals.

According to a report in Live Science, a NASA scientist has unveiled a postage-stamp-sized sensor that can plug into an iPhone and convert Apple’’s beloved product into a mobile chemical detector.

The tiny device can sniff out low amounts of ammonia, chlorine gas and methane, and send alerts to other phones or computers over regular phone networks or a Wi-Fi connection.

“Ours is the smallest in the world that can do complete sensing work,” said Jing Li, a physical scientist at NASA’’s Ames Research Center in California.

Her prior work gave the device a strong NASA pedigree that includes air quality sensors tested on the International Space Station.

Li and other researchers developed the proof of concept for the Department of Homeland Security’’s Cell-All program.

Homeland Security hopes to eventually see such sensing chips embedded in everybody’’s cell phone, so that the mobile devices could form a huge chemical-alert network wherever people go.

The new silicon-based sensing chip contains 64 nanosensors that combine compactness, low-cost, low-power and high-speed.

Li’’s group created a power-sipping sensing chip that consumed just 5 milliwatts, or 40 milliwatts when combined with a sampling jet to help pick up chemical traces.

By comparison, an iPhone 3G charger might draw about 2 watts, or 2,000 milliwatts.

The research team estimated that an iPhone battery can last for more than 100 hours while running the sensing chip continuously, without the sampling jet.

Having continuous use with the sampling jet cuts the battery endurance down to around 20 hours – but Li pointed out that the sensing chip would probably run with only a time interval, such as every 5 or 10 minutes for a 1 or 2 minute operation, based on the user’’s desire.

Li’’s group plans create a slicker sensor that can display the data right on the iPhone, because a computer is currently required to do all the data decoding.

The researchers want to not only identify chemicals by name, but also detect chemical concentration, humidity and temperature.

They even plan on the data including pinpoint locations of the chemical events, courtesy of GPS on the iPhone.
